What Goes Up Must Go Down

What Goes Up Must Go Down
Friday 17th May, 2019
Day 7

Location: Prescott to Cottonwood, AZ
Distance: 44 miles
Temp: 38 – 68 F
Wind: 15 mph
Cumulative climbing distance:  2835 ft
Cumulative descending distance:  4,851 ft

Today was a sunny but cool (some would as say cold) day, as the temp was 38 F when we starting biking.  Fortunately we had brought cold weather biking clothes and decided at the last minute to bring them when we saw the 10-day weather forecast for the Arizona mountains.

The photo captions capture the key aspects of the day.

Forgot to include this picture of last night's dinner.  Judi's favorite, Italian food.  Note the portion size and the smile.

Today's ride.  Main element are the climb and descents.

Mega breakfast for 1 person.  We are having difficult eating a sufficient amount of food.

As mention before, I developed bad saddle sores on my butt 3 days ago, which limited my riding enjoyment and resulted in shortened rides each day.  Yesterday Rick Wardell, the chief bike mechanic, recommended using Bag Balm instead of the biking butt butter, which I had been using.  We purchased a container and tried it today.  The improvement was dramatic and the reason for my completing today's ride.

Today's destination is Cottonwood, AZ, which is about 18 miles west of Sedona.  Tomorrow we then ride to Flagstaff.

Just as we cannot east sufficient quantities of food, we cannot drink sufficient amounts of fluid.

Starting the climb to the mountain pass.

Note dog with goggles in the trailer.

Successfully reaching the summit after a 2000 ft climb.

Starting the descent of 4000+ ft.

I briefly hit a max of 32 mph on the descent but was comfortable in the low 20 mph.  The max speed for another rider was 52 mph.

  1. You are now on roads that I have ridden! I've ridden up to Jerome from Cottonwood a couple times. I rode past Jerome towards Prescott on the mountain road but turned around less than a mile out of Jerome due to my uneasiness with the narrow road. Kudos for doing that ride. I have driven a car over that mountain and it is tough. Hang tough. One more clime today (sat) up oak creek canyon. Equally beautiful but challenging. Then you can enjoy the thin air in Flag. MIkeE

  2. On your way to Flagstaff, and one more day to a well deserved day of rest Sunday. Stock up on goods, food and drink on your day of rest and be safe!
