The Little Engine that Could

The Little Engine that Could
Saturday 18th May, 2019
Day 8

Location: Cottonwood to Sedona to Flagstaff, AZ
Distance: 47 miles
Temp: 46 – 68 F
Wind: 15 mph
Cumulative climbing distance:  5,093 ft
Cumulative descending distance:  1,511 ft

Today's ride was a contrast between the stunning scenery in and around Sedona and a monster climb out of Red Creek Canyon, which occurred after the initial 1500 ft of climbing from Cottonwood to Sedona.  The day's cumulative climbing distance is 5,093 ft, the 3rd highest amount of the entire trip.

Very glad that tomorrow is a rest day.

My daughter Allison, husband Mark and grandchildren Liesl and Otto SURPRISED me as I arrived in Flagstaff.

Today's route passes through Sedona and ends in Flagstaff.

Typical scenery on western approaches to Sedona

Judi on final hill leading into downtown Sedona.

Main street in downtown Sedona.  Judi and I were very surprised by the explosion of new building on the road leading into town.  More than 2 miles since we visited here 15 years ago.

  World famous Pink Jeep tours.

Group's morning stop for coffee and treats (sweets) at the "Pink Pig" coffee shop.

Judi enjoying her favorite coffee - extra dry cappuccino.

Entering Red Creek Canyon as one departs Sedona going east.  Note the narrow, no shoulder roadway.  Not easy biking especially with weekend travel and rude car drivers.

A portion of the final set of hairpin turns on the 2100 ft climb out of Red Creek Canyon.

Success.  My motivating thoughts on the entire climb were from the children's book "The Little Engine That Could"

Studying the cue sheet for the remaining ride into Flagstaff.  (Our we there yet?)

What is the likelihood of seeing an animal within 1 mile of a warning sign, especially within 20 ft of the road?  Note the beginning antlers on the bulk elk.

A welcome dinner for a carnivore.
