Must Needed Rest Day with Family
Must Needed Rest Day with Family
Sunday 19th May, 2019
Day 9
Location:
Flagstaff, AZ
Temp: 48 F
at noon, 35 F by dinner
Afternoon
rain and snow showers
The much needed rest day was in many ways a busy, yet relaxing day. Needed to catch up on personal items like laundry, cleaning and lubricating the bikes, and shopping for cold and rainy weather gear.
We had planned for cold and we had planned for rain, but we did not plan for rain with temp's in the 30's. Tomorrow morning temp is forecasted to be 31 F with change of rain and/or snow during the day and strong winds in the PM. And we are biking 94 miles. Makes for tricky clothing selections.
Spent most of the day with my daughter, Allison and family. They live in the Denver area and were able to combine a family vacation to Utah, Arizona and New Mexico with our rest days in Flagstaff and Santa Fe, NM. Always great to spend time with them. The grandkids, Liesl is 4 and Otto is 2, are at a delightful age for memorable interactions.

Flagstaff is on the historic and current east-west main railroad line to Los Angeles.
Also the reason for the famous US route 66 and the current I-40 passing through town.
Visited the Lowell Observatory, which is located on a hill overlooking Flagstaff. The founder, astronomer Percival Lowell located the observatory in Flagstaff in 1894 due to the idea weather, elevation, location of railroad for transportation of goods, and low light pollution. This telescope was installed in 1896. The founder's family founded Lowell, Massachusetts and made their fortune in water-powered textile milling in the 1800's. Also interesting, this observatory discovered the draft planet, Pluto, in 1930.
Historic downtown. Note the snow showers.
Dinner, you guessed it, at an Italian restaurant. Hoping to carb up for tomorrow cold 94 mile bike ride.
